Watched Al Ahli club beat Al Ain tonight in the Etisalat cup (or something) - what an amazing experience!! Angela and I sat in the Al Ain section as it was closest to the VIP bit where her other half was working... what a good decision.
These guys went absolutely nuts - there was jumping over chairs, running around the stands, throwing plastic bottles when the ref made a dodgy decision - the atmosphere was mental!
It was amazing to be a part of something so visceral, an insight that you don't usually get of Emiratis letting loose and being truly passionate about something. As there are so few of them (relatively vs. other nationalities in the country) and they are so proud and private, you rarely see large groups, let alone large groups going nuts about something they love. There was bantering with the police, there was singing and rival chants... loved it.
