Took these on the way to a thirtieth birthday last night, my first one of a good
friend, which was great. It was one of those surreally still evenings - perhaps because I had the big car and it's a bit like driving the popemobile or some kind of space ship, but the new Jumeriah Beach road was sparkly and beautiful, and really peaceful somehow.Looking forward to house hunting on the infamous beach road now they've finished the neverending beautification project, though it might be out of my league now it is so, well, beautiful. I used to think that its shabby splendour was something special, but i think it's still rather magical, perhaps because there are always people milling around, mosques popping up from behind houses, its dotted with shwarma stands and too many traffic lights... pure unadulterated Dxb.
WB's birthday was fab - his parents and sisters and godmother had all turned up from all corners of the globe as a surprise (tho I think he knew his parents were coming) creating a really interesting group of people. Probably less than three or four english people out of the thirty or so there, which was amazingly refreshing. You forget how quickly our multicultural society quickly gets compartmentalized, through no particular fault of anyones, as naturally nationalities gravitate to their own. Double thumbs up to being outside of that comfort zone. Probably shouldn't have chosen to read till 3am this morning after managing to get myself home relatively early and relatively sober, and am struggling to think terribly clearly as a result.
